Amtrak Train Strikes, Kills Pedestrian

A pedestrian died after being struck by an Amtrak train Sunday morning near Torrey Pines State Park, according to officials.

The incident happened just before 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of North Torrey Pines Road and Carmel Valley Road.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, witnesses saw a man walking in the middle of the tracks along the bluffs. Sheriff’s officials said the conductor sounded the horn and activated the emergency breaking system, but was unable to stop before hitting the man.

At this point, his death appears accidental, according to officials.

The 49-year-old victim’s name has not been released. The sheriff's department continues to investigate.

The accident shut down train service in the area.
