Driver Arrested in Deadly Accident

A fatal accident shut down a busy intersection just one block away from University of California San Diego early Monday morning.

The accident happened Sunday night at around 10:30 at the intersection of Genesee Ave and North Torrey Pines Road.

That's where police say, Michael Landry, 30, drove his Infiniti into a Volkswagon that was traveling along North Torrey Pines Road.   Landry was driving under the influence, according to investigators.

The impact was so strong, both cars burst into flames.

The driver of the Volkswagon died at the scene. He or she was so badly injured, officers could not tell if the driver died from the impact of the crash or from the flames.

A witness broke the Infiniti's windows and helped Landry and his passenger get out safely. Landry was arrested for vehicular homicide. A passenger in the Infinity suffered minor injuries.

Some fuel from the Infiniti leaked into the sewer system. Hazmat crews came out and did what they had to do.

The intersection reopened before the morning commute, allowing traffic to pass again around 5 a.m. Monday.
