A Bad Night's Sleep – For A Good Cause

It wasn't exactly a night of sweet dreams, but about 1,000 people slept outside Saturday night to call attention to the plight of the homeless. It's part of the third annual 'Sleepless San Diego' event at Liberty Station.

The participants voluntarily slept outside on cots, cardboard or plastic sheeting.  The event will help raise money for the San Diego Rescue Mission and several other non-profits that help the homeless.  Many people say they have personal reasons for taking part in the event.

"I believe that there is a need for San Diego, for America to know that there is a homeless plight. Seven out of ten people are veterans, men and women who laid down their lives for our country and we don't give a flip about them, said Nancy Becker. "That's why i do this," she added.

Organizers say there's an increased need for fund raising events because of the struggling economy.  The Rescue Mission serves over 3,000 people every year, providing them with food, shelter and counseling.
