65-Year-Old Woman Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Jamul

A 65-year-old woman was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver in Jamul on Friday evening, the California Highway Patrol said.

Ashley R. Bevers was crossing near the 13000 block of Campo Road near Jamul Feed & Supply around 7:18 p.m. when a Toyota Corolla traveling westbound hit her.

The driver stopped and got out of the car to see what he had hit, and then he got back in and drove away, according to the CHP.

Residents in the area are helping the CHP get justice for Bevers.

"Last night, I came out of my house and I heard a horrendous noise," Jamie La Fortune said. "I walked outside to see cars going every which direction. A lady that pulled over and she screamed, 'Oh my gosh, it's a person.'"

La Fortune lives and works just a few feet from where the accident happened.

Bevers lived nearby and often took the bus to see her husband, who is in a convalescent home, La Fortune said.

Bevers sustained major injuries and was taken Scripps Memorial Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, according to the CHP.

"I was in complete shock," La Fortune said. "The lady walks by my house every single day with her walker."

CHP was able to find the driver and arrested him. They are not disclosing the name and location of the arrest at this time.

Marc Burnett's surveillance cameras were what helped CHP investigators.

"I was pretty blown away by it, to see the person hit the old lady," he said. "It's sad the person lost her life but at least they got the person in custody.
