61-Year-Old Man Struck, Killed by Car in La Mesa

A 61-year-old man walking across the street was struck by a sedan and later died in La Mesa Saturday night, police said. 

The incident happened at approximately 8:42 p.m. when the La Mesa Police Department received a report of a pedestrian struck on the 7500 block of El Cajon Boulevard. 

The man was walking westbound when he was hit by the two-door sedan. The driver of the car stayed on scene and cooperated with police officials. Alcohol was not a factor in the collision, police said. 

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His identity will not be released until family members are notified. 

There has been 35 percent jump in the number of pedestrian deaths in San Diego over the past year, according to an annual report released Thursday by the San Diego County Medical Examiner.
