Six people were hurt, two critically in a three-car crash in the College area Sunday afternoon, police said.
The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of College and University avenues, San Diego police Sgt. Thomas Sullivan said.
San Diego Fire-Rescue transported four people to area hospitals, two critically and two with serious injuries, SDFD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said.
Witnesses said a gold Toyota heading eastbound on University Avenue ran the red light at College Avenue and slammed into a Lexus SUV that was heading north.
"The tan car just zooms right by us, and the Lexus was going at the exact same time, and then they just collide," Chalise Johnson said.
The force of the impact sent the SUV into a small car that was stopped at the light.
The man and the woman in the SUV were critically injured. They were transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego, Sullivan said.

The two men in the Toyota were seriously injured. They were transported to UCSD, he said.
A woman and child in the small car at the light were treated for minor injuries, police said.
The collision may have started as a hit-and-run incident, according to witnesses at the scene.
A woman driving a red Honda was following the Toyota after the driver of the Toyota hit her, Nathan Huynh said.
"Apparently based on what that lady told me, she chased him because he hit him prior to this accident," he said. "So she took matters into her own hand by doing a hot pursuit. She got nervous and took off."
The woman eventually returned and was questioned by police. Police said she will not be charged with a crime.
The intersection of College and University avenues was shut down for several hours as police investigate the crash. It was finally reopened around 6 p.m.
