53 Rabbits Rescued From Home in El Cajon

The Humane Society rescued 53 rabbits from a home in El Cajon last week. They responded to a call from El Cajon Police after the rabbits were discovered in squalid conditions. The animals were seized and are being cared for at the Humane Society. About half of the rabbits are ready for adoption now.

"Upon arrival, the rabbits were examined by our medical team. Fortunately, most were found to be in good health, despite the terrible conditions they were living in. It's obvious that the owner cared about the animals but couldn't keep up with the care they needed, so she was grateful to receive our help," said Stephen MacKinnon, Chief of Humane Law Enforcement for San Diego Humane Society. "We see this type of situation often when well-intentioned animal lovers become overwhelmed with the immense number of animals in their home. That's when we need to intervene for the sake of the animals."

The San Diego Humane Society will care for approximately 32,000 domestic and wild animals this year. The rescued rabbits will need specialty veterinary attention, housing enclosures, food and medical supplies.

“Our goal at San Diego Humane Society is to end animal suffering and we’re committed to helping all animals within our reach,” says Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “Protecting animals is our mission and our Humane Officers are sworn in under oath in the state of California to protect animals from cruelty and neglect. These animals deserve a second chance, so we don’t hesitate.”
