5 Injured When AMR Ambulance, 2 Cars Collide in Kearny Mesa

Five people were injured, four of them severely, when an AMR ambulance and two cars collided Thursday on Kearny Villa Road.

A San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson said four of the victims suffered major trauma in the crash.

Investigators say an Infiniti coupe with two male passengers was heading northbound when it crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the ambulance head on.

The ambulance then hit a Hyundai sedan and all three cars ended up on the west side of the roadway.

A male and female passenger in the ambulance were both injured. Neither were patients being transported by the ambulance. The driver suffered a brain bleed and fractured ankle, and the passenger suffered a broken forearm.

The lone occupant of the Hyundai, a 57-year-old man, suffered a broken wrist.

Firefighters had to cut away the roof of the Infiniti to reach the 21-year-old driver and 20-year-old passenger inside.

SDPD said the driver suffered a concussion and other non-life threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the passenger suffered multiple broken bones and internal injuries considered life-threatening.

The ambulance had severe damage to its front end. All five of the victims were taken to Sharp Hospital.

On Sunday, AMR released the following statement regarding the crash:

"Two of our employees were in the ambulance at the time of the accident. There were no patients on board and the ambulance was not driving to a medical emergency. We are extremely grateful for the San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue and everyone else who stepped in to help."

SDPD is investigating the crash. Kearny Villa Road was shut down between Aero Drive and Balboa Avenue.
