3-Year-Old Among 8 Victims in Deadly Wreck

A tragic car accident claimed two lives and injured six others including two adults, several juveniles and a 3-year-old child Saturday morning, police said.

The accident happened on Florida Drive just after midnight in Balboa Park near the Balboa Park Golf Course.

The two door 2001 Chrysler Sebring was carrying eight people and traveling at nearly double the posted speed limit, police said. At the curve in the road, the car went over the center island, hit the curb on the other side of the street and went into the dirt embankment. Officers say the car rolled over several times, ejecting people from the vehicle.

When police arrived at the scene they found two people already dead. "Apparently they were testing how fast the car would go and when the road curved, that's where the car hit the raised center island," Sgt. Jeff Fellows said.

Prysma Mejia,15, was a passenger in that car, she died at the scene, said the Medical Examiner. Mejia was not wearing a seatbelt. The teenager lived at home with her parents and siblings in a home in San Diego.

The driver, Claudia Cueva, 22, also died.  Cueva was wearing a seatlbelt when she crashed. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other 6 passengers were all taken to hospital with serious to minor injuries.
