San Diego Fire crews are trying to determine if a brush fire at the Cowles Mountain trail entrance was started by arsonists.
Witnesses say they saw three people run away from the small fire, which sparked around 8:45 p.m. on a hillside near Navajo Road at Golfcrest Drive.
The fleeing people then got into a car and drove off. Meanwhile, firefighters made quick work of the flames off one of the trails.
Metro Arson Strike Team investigators have taped off the area so they can investigate possible arson in this case.
However, they may have to wait for better morning light to discover more evidence.
