3 Charged in Slain Officer's Death

The San Diego District has officially filed charges in the death of San Diego Police officer Christopher Wilson, the district attorney's office announced. The three suspects will be arraigned in Superior Court on Tuesday.

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis announced that the three defendants Alex Charfauros, 26, Melissa Ortiz, 21, and Patrick Luangrath, 19, have been charged with murder and several other crimes for a total of 13 separate felonies.

Christopher Wilson was a 17-year veteran of the San Diego Police force when he was shot and killed while assisting the U.S. Marshal's service and County Probation officers during a compliance check at an apartment in the Skyline area on Oct. 28, 2010.

“Officer Wilson’s death shook the community and reminded us all about the daily dangers faced by law enforcement in San Diego,” said DA Dumanis. “The criminal charges filed today are the first step in holding the defendants accountable for their conduct that evening.”

If convicted, each defendant faces 25-year-to-life in prison.
