2nd Horse Euthanized, Jockey Hospitalized in 24 Hours

For the second time in 24 hours, a jockey was hospitalized and a horse euthanized after a bad fall at the Del Mar race track.

The most recent incident happened around 4 p.m. on the grass during the fifth race of the day.

As the horses neared the finish line, the horse "Lil Swiss Echo" fractured her leg and threw her rider, Drayden Van Dyke, to the ground, according to a spokesperson for the track.

Van Dyke was trodden on by two other horses. He was taken to the hospital for unknown injuries.
Track officials say 5-year-old mare "Lil Swiss Echo" broke her leg so badly that putting her down was the only option.

On Friday, a filly "Yes She's Unusual" was put down after she fractured her leg during the sixth race. Her jockey, Brice Blanc, was taken to the hospital for a potentially broken arm and possible concussion.

Another horse was euthanized on Friday after the seventh race.

The death of "Lil Swiss Echo" makes the fifth horse loss since the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s opening day on July 17.
