2nd College Campus on Swine Flu Alert

A suspected case of the swine flu has sickened a student at the University of San Diego, school officials told the North County Times Thursday.

There are no immediate plans to close the campus, unless ordered to do so by authorities, university spokeswoman Pamela Gray Payton told the paper.

The ailing student went to the campus clinic late Wednesday afternoon, and tested positive for a strain of influenza that is a strong indicator of the swine flu, Gray Payton said.

The student, a campus resident, has been moved to isolated housing, and will not return to classes until he or she is no longer considered infectious, Gray Payton told the paper.

San Diego State University officials issued a mass email alerting staff and students of a “suspected" case of the swine flu Tuesday night.

So far this case has not been confirmed, but the school is working with the health department to take precautions.

Officials say the student does not live on campus and will not be returning to class until his or her condition improves.

Health and education officials investigating California swine flu reports are focusing attention on schools, which are described as rich breeding grounds for influenza.
