$2.5K Reward Offered for Turtle Torturer: PETA

The airborne turtle was trapped in a tree

PETA has offered a hefty reward for information leading to the arrest of a person who duct-taped a turtle to helium-inflated balloons and left to float away.

The animal rights group is offering $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the crime.

The box turtle was found in an Oceanside neighborhood on Aug. 19. It was trapped in a tree, attached to more than a dozen colorful balloons.

"This helpless turtle was undoubtedly terrified by this ordeal," says Daphna Nachminovitch from PETA. "Perpetrators of cruel or violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders, so it's crucial that this abuser be brought to justice immediately."

Currently the turtle is being kept safe by the San Diego Humane Society. The investigation is ongoing.
