258 Gas Stations Miss Pollution Deadline

As many as 258 local gasoline stations may be out of compliance with new regulations aimed at containing fuel vapors, the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District told the North County Times.

Owners of several of those stations said last month that they expected the new regulations to force them to shut down, at least temporarily, but it wasn't immediately clear Wednesday morning how many had done so.

Officials with the district said last month that 829 stations had either indicated an intention to retrofit or replace pumps or had complied with the regulations, which took effect April 1.

The regulations require pumps to further limit the portion of gasoline that vaporizes into the atmosphere, where it's believed to contribute to smog.
