2 Hikers in Distress on East County Trail

Cedar Creek Falls trails dangerous this time of year, county officials said

Sheriff's Department personnel were called to rescue two hikers in distress Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency personnel located the hikers at about 3 p.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Temperatures in the desert were near 100 degrees Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The rescue comes just over a week since one 19-year-old woman died of apparent heat stroke. After her death, county officials sent out a warning to all hikers to be mindful of extreme temperatures, and to stay inside if temperatures rise.

Prior to Wednesday's rescue, the Sheriff's Department has performed four rescues at the Cedar Creek Falls trails this year.

"No matter your level of health, anyone needs to be careful of the dangers of walking in the heat," read a statement from the department. "Take it easy when temperatures are this hot. Move your exercise indoors or schedule any outdoor activity for early morning or evening to avoid the real heat of the day.
