Woman Arrested in Connection With Fires Outside Homes in Allied Gardens

A woman was arrested Tuesday for setting or trying to set fires outside at least three homes in Allied Gardens overnight, San Diego police said.

A woman first called 911 to report her car was on fire outside her home on Barclay Avenue, just of Waring Road at about 3 a.m. She said a woman was inside her Hyundai and took off after a fire ignited.

"This woman was just yelling, kind of incoherent, and yeah, she set the inside of our car on fire," Christy Redick told NBC 7.

The Redicks were able to get their infant and their family dog out of the home safely.

On the street, Redick ran into her neighbor, Eddie Garcia, who lives on the same street and said he woke to use the restroom spotted the tarp of his boat on fire.

"I opened the door and saw the tarp of my boat was on fire and so I ran out and got the hose and sprayed it down. That’s when I looked down across the street here -- the car was lit on fire," Garcia said.

San Diego police did detain one woman for questioning about a mile from where the fires occurred but it was not clear if she was placed under arrest or suspected of starting the fire.

Redick said the fire destroyed her Hyundai and left her Fiat looking like a "toasted marshmallow." The fire also spread to their garage before firefighters were able to put it out.

When the sun came up, another homeowner discovered a rag had been stuffed into the gas tank of his Honda in what is believed to be another effort to set it on fire.

A woman was detained for questioning and later arrested in connection with the fires.
