Fire Guts a Spring Valley Apartment

Residents of an apartment complex in Spring Valley are breathing a sigh of relief after firefighters quickly doused a two-alarm fire just before 4:00am Monday morning.

The fire broke out in an apartment complex in the 3000-block of Charwood Ct. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to one unit in the building, according to San Miguel fire officials.

The fire started when one of the residents tried to start a fire in the fireplace. Investigators said when the resident struck the lighter, there was a swift explosion and a nearby area rug caught fire. When the resident tried to throw the rug out on the balcony, firefighters said it hit one of the other residents in the leg causing severe burns.

The Sheriff's Arson/Bomb team will investigate the cause of the fire.

Damage from the fire is estimated at $300,000.
