19-Year-Old College Grad: “Grab Life by the Horns”

Nearly 1,800 graduates accepted degrees Saturday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds – including the youngest ever graduate from Cal State San Marcos.

“I figure life itself is fast, so why not get into the fast lane.”

Malachi Harper is just 19-years old – and the first person in his family to get a higher education.

”For me, it's like being reborn. It's going out in the world. I now have an education behind me,” the CSUSM Graduate said.

Harper was home schooled by his mother who he says compelled him to move forward and get it done fast.

He graduated from high school when he was 15 years old and graduated from Cal State San Marcos with a 4.0 GPA. Now he says he'll pursue a PhD and is considering a career in law.

“Some people say it’s gift to have the drive to be educated and it’s natural. For me it may be natural but I try to work very hard at it,” he said. “I want to grab life by the horns and go as far as I can.”

Harper is looking at USC, Stanford and Berkley for his next step – but first, he says he'll take a year off from school and travel the world.
