18-Month-Old in Hospital After Ingesting Pot at Otay Mesa Home

An investigation is underway after an 18-month-old child ingested an unknown amount of marijuana at a home in San Diego's Otay Mesa West neighborhood.

The child ingested the pot at the family's home, located on the 900 block of Beyer Way, according to SDPD Officer Buttle. However, it is unclear when the child first ingested the marijuana, or how it happened.

San Diego police were called to Scripps Chula Vista around 5:25 p.m. Sunday to conduct a follow-up investigation.

The toddler has since been transferred to Rady Children's Hospital. SDPD Officer Hernandez said the department does not have an update on the child's condition.

SDPD detectives and Child Welfare Services (CWS) officials are investigating the case. No arrests have been made at this time.

Lilian Nguyen, Executive Assistant to the Child Welfare Services Director, said all matters related to child welfare are confidential and they could not comment on the case.

Nguyen said the department does investigate four major categories of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual and neglect, though she could not comment on which category this case falls under.
