14 Houses Evacuated by Gas Leak

Firefighters are concerned a single spark could ignite a gas leak in Mira Mesa that has forced 56 people to leave 14 houses.

San Diego Fire says construction crews ruptured a 2-inch gas line near Andasol Street and Birds View Court just before 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Westward winds were blowing the strong odor of gas throughout the neighborhood as it leaked.

Lee Swanson with the SDFD says the evacuations are just a precaution, and people should be allowed back in their homes tonight.

Still, firefighters warned people not to start their cars or do anything that could spark an explosion.

"Quite often the residents want to start their cars if they want to leave and move things," said SDFD Battalion Chief Rick Ballard. "We do not allow them do that. Basically they have to walk out."

SDG&E crews are expected to have the line repaired soon.

Young children and one disabled man were among those temporarily displaced.
