Mother: Toddler's Death Not School's Fault

Says parents should not be afraid to send their children to the school where her son choked to death

The mother of a toddler who fatally choked Monday at an Oceanside preschool said she doesn’t blame the school for her son’s death.

Aja Howell spoke in front of The Montessori School of Oceanside Wednesday morning where two days prior, her 3-year-old son Tyler choked to death on a pushpin.

"This was Tyler's home, everyone was with him till the moment he was gone,” she said. “I don’t want any parents to be afraid to come here."

Howell added that her son’s death was an accident, and that she still believes the school is a “wonderful place.”

She hugged friends and school representatives who gathered there Wednesday.

“I’m usually not the person who needs support, but I need anything I can get right now,” she told friends and reporters.

Services for Tyler will potentially be held Sunday afternoon at the Oceanside Calvary Chapel.
