Pile up causes major injuries to one driver

A dump truck carrying 7 tons of asphalt was the center of a major pile-up on Interstate 15 Thursday morning.

The dump truck stopped after colliding with a spun-out car, according to CHP reports. A car then crashed into the dump truck, causing major injuries to the driver of the second car.

Officers say the pile-up occurred on Interstate-15 near Miramar Way around 2 a.m. when the first driver struck the dump truck as it was leaving a construction site off Highway 163.

The second accident involved a Hyundai sonata, which crashed into the dump truck traveling at approximately 50 to 70 mph. moments after the dump truck hit the first car.

The driver involved in the second collision was taken by ambulance to Scripps La Jolla hospital in serious condition.

Several lanes were closed on I-15 as authorities responded to the scene.
