A transient in Hillcrest is in critical condition after an assault Wednesday night.
Homicide detectives are investigating the assault, as they believe the man's injury is life-threatening.
A motorist called 911 upon being flagging down by the transient on the 1300 block of Washington St. according to the San Diego Police Department.
The man complained of pain in his head and was transported to a nearby hospital. His condition has since deteriorated.
Preliminary police investigation revealed that the transient was hit in the head with a rock during an altercation with an acquaintance. Police believe the suspect may be a man in his mid- to late-thirties, approximately 5'7'' weighing about 185-190 pounds. He has short brown hair and was possibly wearing a red shirt and camouflage shorts.
Police still do not know what the altercation was about, and are withholding the name of the victim.
