10,000-Square-Foot Mansion Up in Flames

Firefighters from LA County, Ventura County, and LA city fire departments spent hours getting a stubbon blaze under control at a huge residential structure in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County just north of Chatsworth.  One Los Angeles city firefighter suffered a broken ankle when he was struck by falling debris and was transported to a hospital in Simi Valley.

The flames moved from the multi-car attached garage into the home's attic and across the roof, causing extensive damage.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the fire at the three-story 10,000-square-foot mansion at 22536 Zaltana St. broke out shortly after 3:30 a.m. At 6:30 a.m., there were no longer active flames, but the fire continued to smolder.

The property is north of the Ronald Reagan Freeway in a gated community. Homeowner David Hunt, who is blind, was able to evacuate safely with his wife, his daughter and his son, who attends college in Santa Barbara. Hunt said smoke alarms woke the family up.

The Hunts have lived at the home for more than 21 years, NBC4 reported.
