#1 Pick in NBA Draft Has San Diego Connection

Deandre Ayton, the first pick in the NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, spent his first two high school season in San Diego playing for Balboa City.

With the first pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns selected Deandre Ayton, a 7'1 center from the University of Arizona.

Ayton, played just one season at Arizona, before that he had a transient high school career.  Ayton started his high school career at Balboa City High School, a small private school in San Diego.  From 2013-2015, Ayton played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Balboa City.  As a sophomore in 2014–15, Ayton led Balboa to a 17-14 record, averaging 21 points, 16 rebounds and 3.8 blocks per game. As Ayton put up big numbers, he rose the recruiting rankings becoming one of the top recruits in the nation.

Ayton's playing days in San Diego ended abruptly when he transferred to Hillcrest Prep Academy in Phoenix, where he played his final two high school seasons.

The 19 year old Ayton was born in the Bahamas, the Phoenix Suns will be the latest step in a basketball career that has taken him all over the world with a short stop in San Diego.
