1 Killed in Vista Parking Lot Crash

Richard Lee, 35, was killed when his car plowed into a traffic signal pole at South Santa Fe Avenue and Civic Center Drive on April 9

A 35-year-old man killed in a crash with another vehicle and a power pole near the parking lot of a Vista business over the weekend has been identified.

Vista resident Richard Lee was the victim of the collision, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's (ME) office has confirmed.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) said deputies were dispatched to the intersection of South Santa Fe Avenue and Civic Center Drive around 12:10 a.m. Saturday after two cars collided.

The SDSO said the driver of a BMW, for unknown reasons, rolled the car over and crashed, landing in the parking lot of a nearby business. Another driver in a Honda, now identified as Lee, collided with the BMW and then plowed into a traffic signal pole.

The ME's office said Lee's car was severely damaged in the crash, entangled with the signal light post. He suffered critical injuries and died at the scene, investigators said.

The driver of the BMW, whose name was not released, suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Palomar Medical Center. That driver’s condition was unknown as of 10 a.m. Saturday.

No passengers were in either vehicle, the SDSO said.

The deadly crash is under investigation. At this point, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.
