Man Hit by 87 mph-Surfliner in Carlsbad Expected to Survive

Amtrak tried to alert the man to get off the tracks several time, but officials said he seemed disoriented

A man was struck by an Amtrak train, traveling at 87 mph, near State Street in Carlsbad on Sunday but was expected to survive, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department confirmed.

The northbound Surfliner train was heading for Oceanside around 8:30 p.m. when Amtrak tried to alert the man to get off the tracks.

Train officials alerted him several times, but deputies believe he may have been disoriented.

The train slowed to 87 mph but couldn’t stop in time. The victim, who's in his 50s, was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies will be looking over surveillance footage Monday, and will interview the man to find out why he was on the tracks. They don't know whether alcohol played a factor.

The train was delayed for more than an hour.
