A truck driver died when his pineapple-hauling semi-truck overturned on Interstate 8 near Boulevard early Monday, the California Highway Patrol said.
The driver, identified Wednesday as 22-year-old Levar Shawka, veered off of eastbound I-8 near the junction with state Route 94 and crashed into an embankment at about 2:30 a.m., CHP said.
CHP said the man was unrestrained inside the 53-foot tractor trailer at the time of the crash and was ejected onto the freeway. He died at the scene.
It was not clear what caused the driver to drift off the roadway but CHP said drugs or alcohol were not considered factors.
The Medical Examiner's Office said other drivers who were not involved called 911 to report the crash, which left debris scattered across the highway.
CHP originally said the man was 35-years-old. The Medical Examiner's Office said Shawka as 22 years old.
