A motorcyclist was killed when he lost control and crashed into a parked car on State Route 79 Saturday afternoon, California Highway Patrol confirmed.
He was identified as retired La Mesa police officer Tom Ruth.
Ruth crossed the double yellow line and sideswiped a truck, according to officials.
The crash happened just north of Japacha Fire Road around 2:30 p.m.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's wife during this difficult time," the La Mesa Police Officers' Association, said.
Ruth retired in 2009.
