A suspected DUI crash killed a woman in the North County Wednesday, according to San Diego police Lt. Leonard Flake.

The incident started when a Fiat 500, heading east on Carmel Valley Road north of State Route 56, crossed the center divider. As the 30-year-old driver, Anthony Rodriguez, neared Camino del Sur, he slammed into a Chevrolet Nova driving the opposite direction.

The 61-year-old woman in the Nova, Enid Diane Mayer-Sheaf, died at the scene, Flake said.

After undergoing a roadside sobriety test, Rodriguez was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI.

"The horn has been sounded many, many times for many years continually about the perils of drinking and driving," said Flake. "Yet here is another example of what frequently occurs when people make the choice to drink and then get behind the wheel."

Flake said police will seek a felony manslaughter charge against Rodriguez, though it will ultimately be up to the District Attorney to file charges.

The intersection is located south of Santa Luz and west of Rancho Penasquitos and Interstate 15. Officers closed down the area for hours as they investigated.
