Swimmers, Surfers Warned as High Surf Pounds California

High surf is pounding much of the Southern California coast Sunday and beachgoers are being warned of dangerous waves and rip currents.

The National Weather Service said a strong southeast swell from Tropical Storm Ivo off Mexico could bring waves up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) to some areas from San Diego to Ventura.

Waves and surf are going to reach 2 to 4 feet with local sets to 5 feet just north of Carlsbad.

Swimmers and surfers are urged to stay near lifeguards and never turn their backs on the ocean.

Forecasters said big waves will last into Tuesday, with peak swells coming Sunday and Monday.

Flooding is possible in some low-lying areas and beach erosion is also possible.

A beach hazards statement is issued when threats such as strong rip currents, elevated surf heights, minor tidal overflow or lightning are possible at local beaches.
