“He Was Very Lucky”

A Ford Escape launched off State Route 52 near Regents Road took out a road sign, flew over bushes, a fence and ended up 50 feet below in some trees Saturday.

“Over the shrubs, over the fence and landed at the bottom of an Oak tree in between some palm trees and it was embedded underneath the trees themselves,” San Diego Fire Dept. spokesperson David Pilkerton said.

Firefighters rescued the driver, who was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

“He was very lucky,” Pilkerton said. “It could have been a lot worse, he could have been impaled by the fence post.

One lane of the freeway was shut down for a time, causing a traffic backup.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
