Two people had to be rescued and taken to the hospital after being washed off their boat by breaking waves in the Mission Bay channel.
Lifeguards got a call around 8 a.m. on Saturday of a boat having a tough time navigating the large breaking waves and responded immediately.
“The report was that people were being washed off the boat and the boat was in severe trouble,” San Diego Lifeguard Lieutenant Andy Lerum said.
The 25-foot boat with six people onboard ended up being overturned by the surf.
“A couple of them swam over and jumped onto the jetty uninjured and a few others were rescued out of the water,” Lt. Lerum said.
Two people were sent to the hospital. One was being treated after nearly drowning and the other was being treated for hypothermia. They are expected to be okay. The other four people were evaluated and were not in need of medical attention.
Lifeguards believe the boat was involved in a fishing tournament.

At the time of the rescue, a high surf advisory was in effect. Lifeguards later closed the channel to all boating traffic.
