New Cancer Center Planned in La Jolla

Scripps Health held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a new cancer treatment center in La Jolla.

Doctors say the $40 million center will use machines that provide more precise targeting of cancerous tumors and cut a patient's treatment time from 30-minutes down to just 5 minutes.

The new technology will also allow for higher doses of more precise radiation reduce side effects.

"Well, you know we're fortunate, our healthcare system right now is strong and as a result of that and with our philanthropic support from our community, we're able to bring this kind of technology here to our patients in San Diego," said Chris Van Gorder, president of Scripps Health.

The center is scheduled to open in late and will treat more than 1,000 patients a year.
