Avoid Heartburn On Super Bowl Sunday

Big game food can really cause big game pain

Big juicy burgers, nachos, gooey cheese, beer and chili mixed with screaming Steelers and Cardinal fans and you could have the perfect recipe for Super Bowl heartburn even if your team wins.

"All of the ingredients in a Super Bowl party can spell disaster for those who experience mild heartburn or stomach problems" according to Donald Lipkis, M.D. of Alvarado Hospital.  "Heartburn is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders in the world with more than 25 million Americans suffering from the condition on a daily basis."

Alvarado Hospital and Dr. Lipkis offer the following tips to help patients reduce symptoms in general for heartburn:

  • Avoid lying down right after eating and within two to three hours of bedtime.
  • Elevate the head of the bed four to six inches.
  • Avoid eating large meals. Instead, eat smaller, more frequent meals.
