A Pox on Chula Vista's Houses

Half a dozen itchy, feverish students have prompted county health officials to spread the ... word.

All six kids are ninth-graders at Chula Vista's Bonita High School, which is part of the Sweetwater Union High School District. That news sent secretaries scrambling for the copy machine to print out letters to more than 2,000 students and nearly 200 staffers.

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency said the first student was diagnosed on March 21, and the most recent case came to their attention on Sunday. Two of the teenagers were never immunized for chickenpox, and four had received only one shot.

"This is a good reminder that parents need to check with their physicians to make sure their children get two doses of chickenpox vaccine when appropriate and are inoculated against other vaccine-preventable diseases," County Public Health Officer Dean Sidelinger said.
