Woman Donates 92 Gallons of Breast Milk in Honor of Stillborn Son

A woman who gave birth to a stillborn baby at 20 weeks has donated 92 gallons of breast milk to five different milk banks.

Amy Anderson told TODAY.com that she started pumping regularly because of the benefits of human milk — against her doctor’s orders, and that her employer would not allow her breaks to pump milk.

The law, she was told, didn’t include concessions for bereaved or surrogate mothers. She decided to quit her job and try to change the law to include all lactating women.

"It doesn't matter whether or not you now have a baby to hold. I was a lactating woman with physical needs," Anderson, from Caribou, Maine, told TODAY.com.

Her donations have helped banks in four different states and Canada, and resulted in more than 30,000 feedings.
