Why We Go Gray

Scientists have finally figured out what makes us go gray.

Hydrogen peroxide.

The hair on our head turns gray because it bleaches itself naturally as we age.

All of our hair cells make a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide. As we age, that little bit becomes a lot.

Eventually, we end up with such a big buildup of hydrogen peroxide on our hair follicles, it blocks the way melanin normally behaves and melanin is what gives our hair it’s natural color or pigment.

So we bleach our hair pigment from within. It turns gray first and then white.

As for the notion that gray hair is a sign of wisdom, I’m guessing a man came up with that one. Let’s face it, when vanity comes calling, she’s never got a head of gray hair!
