When you sit home this weekend on the couch watching a movie, think of the men and women "hoofing it for hooters" - walking the 60-mile route from Del Mar Fairgrounds to PETCO Park to raise money for breast cancer research.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day kicked off in the early morning hours Friday. In the crowd of walkers making it down the PCH this weekend, you'll see funny hats, costumes, boas and high fives. Behind those cheers and smiles, there is an important and serious reason for being a part of the annual event.
"We are here cause our mom passed away in 2000," said Katie Rider. Melanie Paloma had her Aunt Jo Jo, a four-time cancer survivor, on her mind as she prepared for the walk. Kristin Cenderelli is walking for a friend.
They walk for those who can't -- to celebrate the survivors and in honor of the courage and strong spirit of anyone affected by breast cancer.
The Breast Cancer 3-Day takes place in 15 regions across the country with 85% of the money raised going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. The rest goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
