Stanford Receives $90 Million To Examine Cancer Stem Cells

Big-time money may help prevent return of disease

The war on cancer rages on.

And $90 million worth of reinforcements have been sent to the front lines at Stanford University.

Researchers there are beneficiaries of $90 million from the Ludwing Fund, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

That "vast sum of money" will be used to study cancer stem cells -- that is, hidden cells that "remain tenacious after treatment" and which may be the cause of cancers that return after remission.

The Stanford researchers will focus on cancer stem cells -- and with such a big pot of money at their disposal, the research will continue for years to come, the newspaper reported.
