What’s the fuss? Bisphenol A or BPA is a chemical used in certain polycarbonate plastic containers, dental sealants, and even in certain paper used for receipts. BPA has been used for years in manufacturing these and other household products. But is it safe?
Most recently to weigh in on the debate is The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)… and they want more studies done. Why? Because studies have shown high levels of BPA in human pee. And high levels of BPA in urine have been linked to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and liver problems. To date there is no evidence of a causal link between products containing BPA and higher BPA levels in urine. Hence JAMA’s call for more studies.
So, we know BPA is bad in pee, but is it bad in plastic?
Don’t expect the final word on whether or not products containing BPA are safe to come down anytime soon. The Food and Drug Administration has recently gone on the record as calling it “safe,” but the issue is still hotly contested and, as JAMA suggests, bears further study.
