New Hospital Opens Doors

San Diego gets its first new hospital in more than 15 years.

The ceremonial ribbon was cut Thursday for the Stephen Birch Healthcare Center on the Sharp hospital campus in Kearny Mesa.

The new hospital has more than 300 private rooms, 12 family waiting areas, and ten operating rooms.

Those high-tech surgery suites are specially designed for heart surgery, orthopedics, and transplant surgery.

Sharp Healthcare's Dan Gross says emergency room also has it own X-ray and imaging system.

“So patients can have a 64-slice CT scan performed in the E-R, so diagnoses can be made quicker, better care can be delivered,” said Gross.

The 7-story building cost $196 million.

All patient rooms have private bathrooms and a pull-out sofa, so a family member can spend the night.
