Are Economic Woes Keeping You Awake?

How to sleep during these turbulent economic times

If the economy is getting you down and you're staying awake because of it, here are some tips on how to get some good sleep. Almost one-fifth of Americans reported drinking alcohol to manage their stress, and 16% reported smoking--two factors that can affect your ability to get quality sleep according to an American Psychological Association survey published on the website Health.com.

Among the recommendations to relax are: take a break and read a fashion magazine or a funny book, put away the checkbook and the bills after dinner, exercise instead of drinking alcohol.

Get medical help if you need it.  Mary Susan Esther, M.D. of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine tells Health.com that a hypnotic medication might be prescribed to break a cycle of sleeplessness. "It always depends on the patient, " she says.
