Fatal Police Shooting in South LA Sparks Protests

The fatal shooting of an 18-year-old has sparked protests and street closures.

A South Los Angeles intersection became the center of a protest Sunday night over the fatal police shooting of an 18-year-old man.

A vigil was held Sunday to honor Carnell Snell Jr. The 18-year-old was shot and killed by police on Saturday after he ran from a vehicle involved in a pursuit.

The fatal shooting sparked protests in the South Los Angeles neighborhood and even in front of Mayor Eric Garcetti's home in Hancock Park.

Aerial footage showed a large police presence at 108th Street and Western Avenue, where demonstrators in the street forced road closures on Sunday evening. Drivers performed donuts, spinning in the street, as passengers were hanging out of the windows and sunroof.

Four people were arrested for failing to disperse, police said.

The night began with a peaceful prayer vigil for Snell, but family friends told NBC4 their anger isn't just about Snell.

"There are other ways to restrain these young black men instead of just gunning them down," family friend Trina Collins said. "There’s other resources they can use. They don’t have to kill them in cold blood like that."

Sunday's protests mark the second night of demonstrations on the streets of South LA. The crowd dwindled overnight.

Earlier Sunday, activists called on Los Angeles police to publicly name the officers involved in the shooting, which occurred near Snell's home. They also appealed for a quick and transparent investigation.

"We don't want to see a cover-up. We don't want to see a whitewash," Earl Ofari Hutchinson of the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable said after meeting with the Snell's family. "We have a family that's grieving. We have a community that's grieving."

Police have disclosed little about their investigation other than to say a handgun was found at the scene. It was not clear if Snell was carrying it.

In a statement, the LAPD said investigators will gather evidence related to the shooting to determine whether deadly force was necessary and the district attorney's office will review it to see if any criminal charges are warranted.

Another man was shot and killed by police in South LA on Sunday afternoon, making it the second fatal police shooting in the neighborhood in a two day period.

That man's identity has not yet been released.
