Health of Newborn Abandoned in West Covina Subway Bathroom Improving, Police Say

The baby was found upright with his head just above the water in a restaurant bathroom

The health of a newborn boy abandoned by his mother in a Southern California restaurant bathroom was improving, police said Tuesday.

The child was born Monday morning in a West Covina Subway restaurant bathroom, where the mother left the full-term baby boy crying in the toilet, according to the West Covina Police Department.

Subway workers said they heard the woman moaning in the bathroom.

Surveillance footage shows the mother casually walking out after just giving birth to the child in just 10 minutes.

The baby, found upright with his head just above the water line, was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in critical condition. A hospital spokesperson said Tuesday the child was in stable condition and was expected to start taking baby formula.

The mother, identified by police as 38-year-old Mary Grace Trinidad, was arrested nearby not long after she gave birth. She also remained hospitalized Tuesday, facing charges of attempted murder and child abandonment.

"Even I felt love for him," said Evanka Escobedo, the manager at Subway who found the baby, said. "So I just don't know how she could abandon her own child. It was terrible."

Trinidad, who is believed to be homeless, was arrested just over a month ago for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to police.
