Parents and 2 Young Girls Killed in High Desert Crash

Two parents their two girls, strapped into car seats, were killed in a crash Tuesday in the high desert north of Los Angeles.

The crash, which left some sheriff's deputies shaken, was reported at Sierra Highway and East Avenue M in the Palmdale area, according to the county fire department. Aerial video showed a passenger van and heavily damaged car on the four-lane road.

"This is very difficult to see when we have a family that passed away from a traffic collision. That’s why we try to enforce speed in Palmdale because it is a problem," said Detective Rowell Quemuel.

Detectives said the family's green car was traveling north on Sierra Highway and for some reason, the driver swerved into the oncoming lane after losing control. The car hit an Antelope Valley vanpool head on.

Investigators said the mother and father, in their 20s or 30s, died on impact along with their baby girl, believed to be 1 year old.

The other baby girl was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.

The children were in child car seats in the sedan and the parents were wearing seat belts, crash investigators said.

The driver of the vanpool, in his 50s, was recovering at Antelope Valley Hospital.

The crash was still under investigation.
