“Poopgate” Continues, Voters Want Former Mayor Off City Council

The so-called "Poopgate" began on June 7 when video surveillance caught then-San Marino Mayor Dennis Kneier throwing a bag of dog feces on a neighbor’s lawn.

The man whose dog poop controversy prompted his resignation as mayor of the affluent Southern California community of San Marino is now the target of another recall.

One-hundred registered San Marino voters signed a Notice of Intent to circulate a recall petition to remove Councilman Dennis Kneier from the city council, according to a press release.

"Programs and actions by Councilmember Kneier that are believed to be so disfavored by the majority of voters that Mr. Kneier should no longer hold office as City Councilmember," attorney Cary Davidson said in a statement.

The so-called "Poopgate" began on June 7 when video surveillance caught Kneier throwing a bag of dog feces on a neighbor’s lawn. The fallout led to Kneier resigning at the request of his community 10 days later.

The City of San Marino has not received recall paperwork yet.

For a successful recall election, 25 percent of registered voters must sign the petition. As of Wednesday, that would mean 2,143 people need to sign it.

Vice Mayor Eugene Sun has mayoral responsibilities until the council’s next scheduled meeting on June 27. At that meeting, the council will select a new mayor and vice mayor.

Councilmember Kneier has not yet responded to the petition.
