Would-Be Burglar Trips Alarm, Ends Up Surrounded Under Home's Fumigation Tent

A SWAT team arrested a suspected would-be burglar Wednesday afternoon after an alarm sounded at a Paramount home that was under tenting for fumigation treatment.

After an almost seven-hour standoff, deputies searched the home and located one man inside the house. He was arrested, and deputies determined he was alone in the home, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

During the standoff, deputies did not know how many people were in the home or if they were armed.

An alarm went off in the home in the 15700 block of Verdura Avenue around 5 a.m., according to the Sheriff’s Department’s Lakewood station.

The suspect was led out of the home just after noon. Officials said he lives in the area and has been arrested several times on drug-related charges.

The home is currently being fumigated, which prompted a Hazardous Materials team to respond as well.

Police blocked off the street for most of the morning.
