Woman in Orange County Crash Can't Remember Identity

Dubbed "Jane Doe" by the hospital employees who have taken care of her for months, the woman is finally uttering some words that may be clues to who she is

It's been a long journey for a woman who has forgotten her own identity since being hit by a car on a Southern California street five months ago.

The woman, who says her name is Martha, is still unable to give authorities enough information to find her family.

Since recently becoming able to speak, she uttered a name and partial address to her nurses.

But the Santa Ana Police Department said they found nothing when they ran her fingerprints.

"We took her fingerprints, ran them through all the systems and nothing," Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told NBC4.

Police said the woman was jaywalking across Fourth and Lacy streets in Santa Ana before on Oct. 15, 2013, when the driver of a car hit her with so much force, it knocked her shoes off.

She was rushed to Western Medical Center in critical condition. Now, she is known in the hospital as "Jane Doe" as officials search for clues to her identity.

The woman told nurses she had two sons but was confused about their ages. She has claimed to be originally from Mexico and living alone in an apartment, but doesn't know exactly where.

"She really puts effort into, you know, getting better," nurse Natalia Payan said. "She participates."

The woman whispered a message to her nurse for whoever does know who she is.

"I want you to come and look for me," she said.
